Requirements for Online Store and Ecommerce Software

This software has been written in Perl which can run in both Unix and Windows servers. However, it is relying on certain Unix functions and as such it is recommended that it is installed on a server running Unix or Linux, and Perl.  This should not be any problem since many ISP’s offer Unix standard servers. The software has not yet been adapted for full functionality on Windows servers.

What you need in order to run this software:

  • (Requirement)  The retail version of this software must be licenced. When you purchase the licence we will remotely install the software on a suitably outfited server of your choice.
  • (Requirement)  A server running Unix. It may be your own server which you maintain or it can be a server at an ISP of your choice. If you would like us to recommend an ISP we have some options to propose that would currently cost less than $35 per month.
  • (Requirement)  You need to have an email address, a way to connect to the internet, and a browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.  However, it is common that if you have or rent a server account, you are also given email accounts with it. A way to access the internet is usually any local internet service provider.
  • (Option) If you would like to have automatic online credit card clearance, then you also need a merchant account for credit card clearance. This is your option and it is independent of the software’s functionality. The software includes routines that allow you to use merchant accounts with either Authorize.net or Cybercash. However, it can be easily adapted for any other provider just as well. A merchant account is only necessary for automatic clearance. It is not needed for the software to function however. You may clear credit card transactions by any other means at your disposal.

Things that you do NOT necessarily need (to head off questions you may have in mind):

  • A database server is NOT needed. This script generates and manages its own files. This makes it a cheaper solution than systems relying on database servers.
  • Technical support personnel is NOT necessary.  The software is user friendly and we have gone into considerable effort to make it intuitive. So you should be able to handle it without substantial expertise, quite possibly on your own without the need for technical maintainance personnel. If you currently have technical maintainance personnel you should not need additional, and if your server is rented at an ISP they usually provide server maintainance. They will not (and cannot) provide maintainance for the software, but if you feel comfortable handling it yourself you should then be quite independent.
